Companies in the United States throw out thousands upon thousands of pounds of old computer equipment as it becomes obsolete. These machines, filled with hazardous materials such as mercury, cadmium and lead, often make their way to landfills in Asia, where they poison the environment and local villagers who scavenge for precious metals.
Think Computer Foundation aims to put old computers to more constructive use, by rounding up obsolete or broken equipment and retrofitting it for use in schools. In the past, the Foundation has shipped numerous systems to children in Jamaica and Brazil. It has also made donations of used computers and advanced computer software to the Cleveland Public Schools.
